To ensure the pens are ready for use, simply prime them by pressing the tip down on a nearby surface to get the tip wet before testing it on a surface to see how much paint will be applied. Then, place the queen in a marking tube or cage and gently move the plunger to apply a small drop to her back (thorax). Allow a few minutes for the paint to dry before reintroducing the queen back to the colony. Caution: be careful not to apply too much paint on the queen bee, as it may drown her.
